What we know about Southport killer Axel Rudakubana
Axel Rudakubana was born in Cardiff to Rwandan parents and was living in the village of Banks, near Southport, when he carried out the attack aged 17.
Detectives investigating the murders discovered that he had a deep, dark fascination with extreme violence, spending hours researching genocide and watching graphic videos of murders.
He was excluded from mainstream education after bringing a knife to school, and one of his school friends described him as a “ticking time bomb”.
We'll likely learn a little more about Rudakubana's background and motivations at today's sentencing hearing, but it may never be clear what prompted the attack.
After the guilty plea was entered, the Crown Prosecution Service said:
It is clear that this man was a young man who had a disgusting and persistent interest in death and violence. He shows no signs of remorse.
