Southwest Airlines Celebrates America’s 250th Anniversary

In honor of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, Southwest Airlines has unveiled a new patriotic aircraft and formed a partnership to encourage nationwide volunteerism.

The airline introduced its specially themed aircraft, named Independence One. The design incorporates elements of red, white, and blue to celebrate the nation’s founding. It features artistic nods to American history, including the year “1776” in script, thirteen stars symbolizing the original colonies, and the phrase “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” from the Declaration of Independence.

Independence One joins two other American-themed aircraft in the Southwest Airlines fleet: Freedom One, which was launched in 2021, and Liberty One, revealed recently.

Bob Jordan, CEO of Southwest, expressed pride in this milestone, stating, “We honor this important milestone in our nation’s history with our new Independence One and Liberty One aircraft.” Additionally, the airline has partnered with America250, the organization orchestrating national celebrations for the anniversary.

As a part of this initiative, Southwest plans to donate up to $250,000 through its We Serve Together grant program. This program supports nonprofit organizations that engage in employee volunteer efforts.

Interestingly, this funding is based on over 180,000 volunteer hours logged by Southwest Airlines employees in 2025. Rosie Rios, president of America250, emphasized the airline’s role in fostering community ties, saying, “As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, Southwest Airlines’ tradition of bringing people and communities together reflects the spirit of freedom and opportunity that defines our nation.”

The new aircraft had its inaugural flight last week, departing from Dallas and heading to Philadelphia—a city renowned for its historical significance.

Throughout the year, Independence One will operate across the U.S. on various routes, all while contributing to the larger America 250 celebration. Southwest Airlines, which has been around for over 50 years, sees this initiative as a continuation of its mission to connect communities and honor the nation’s history.
