SpaceX Secures $60 Billion Agreement to Acquire AI Coding Start-up Cursor

SpaceX’s Major Move in AI with Cursor Acquisition Deal

SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, has secured a deal allowing it the option to purchase the AI coding startup Cursor Inc. for a staggering $60 billion. This move marks SpaceX’s deeper dive into AI technology as it gears up for an eagerly awaited IPO.

According to reports, SpaceX is collaborating with Cursor to develop what the startup touts as the premier AI for coding and knowledge work. The agreement provides SpaceX with the option to buy Cursor’s parent company, Anysphere, in 2025. Should they decide against the acquisition, SpaceX will still owe $10 billion for their partnership—this would represent one of the largest termination fees ever.

Since its inception in 2022, Cursor has quickly risen in Silicon Valley, achieving a $29 billion valuation by November. Musk aims to bolster SpaceX’s standing in the competitive AI landscape, especially as contenders like OpenAI and Anthropic advance with superior models compared to those at his xAI Institute.

Musk established xAI in 2023 to rival these prominent AI firms, later merging it with SpaceX while the company prepares for a potentially groundbreaking IPO this summer. Over the past year, Musk has consolidated various segments of his diverse business interests into a unified entity focusing on space exploration, infrastructure, social media, and AI.

Last March, Musk brought together his social media platform X and xAI in an all-stock agreement, followed by a merger with SpaceX in February. This integration values the combined organizations at around $1.25 trillion. However, the evolving landscape, including the Cursor arrangements, adds layers of complexity for investors and underwriters trying to gauge the full worth of the conglomerate.

Projected to be valued at $1.75 trillion, SpaceX’s forthcoming IPO could be the largest in history. Still, the addition of xAI has complicated the financial outlook of SpaceX even further. Reports indicate that the AI Research Institute suffered a loss of $6.4 billion in 2025, significantly up from $1.56 billion in 2024. In contrast, Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet division, saw its operating income rise to $4.42 billion last year from $2 billion in 2024. Musk is reportedly contemplating keeping control over this expansive operation through special voting shares.

SpaceX believes that acquiring Cursor would open up avenues for engaging with essential products and software engineers. Cursor is eager to utilize SpaceX’s robust computing infrastructure to enhance its proprietary coding model, Composer, which was introduced last year.

“We think SpaceX is simply the best at building computing resources, and their achievements are remarkable,” remarked Oscar Schulz, president of Anysphere.

Cursor’s revenue exceeded $2 billion annually earlier this year, largely due to its tools designed to boost software engineers’ productivity. The company employs AI models from various leading sources, including OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and Google. However, as these major AI labs rapidly introduce their coding models, such as OpenAI’s Codex and Anthropic’s Claude Code, Cursor is feeling the heat from increasing competition.

Additionally, Cursor’s collaboration with SpaceX might raise national security concerns, especially considering recent reports about its Composer model being based on an open-source framework from a Chinese startup, Moonshot AI.

In a related note, Code Red: Left, Right, China, and the Race to Control AI has been highlighted as a pivotal read in understanding the conservative stance on AI and its implications for society. With major players like Musk diving deeper into AI, discussions around responsible usage and control will only intensify.

Overall, this deal signifies not just a financial maneuver but a broader shift in how AI is integrated into various facets of technology and society at large.
