Spain and Ukraine Sign Defense Agreement
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of Spain’s Socialist Party announced that Spain will collaborate with Ukraine in producing drones, radars, and other defense equipment following a new agreement with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
Currently, Zelenskiy is on a tour of Europe. He recently visited the UK and has now arrived in Spain. After his stop in Spain, he plans to head to Brussels for a two-day EU event.
This meeting marks the fourth official discussion between the two leaders since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. They explored various topics, including Ukraine’s integration into the European Union and ongoing sanctions against Russia.
According to a press release from the Ukrainian President’s Office, they focused on the importance of lifting a two-year, €90 billion decision related to Ukraine, stating it’s not just an economic matter but also one of justice, directly affecting the safety of Ukrainians.
The agreement signed by Sánchez and Zelenskiy includes five new defense deals, with reports indicating a focus on joint production of unmanned aerial vehicles, missiles, and radars.
Sánchez expressed clear support during a press conference, stating, “No one can overlook what is occurring in Ukraine,” emphasizing that Spain, like many nations, strongly condemns the violations of international law and the freedoms of the Ukrainian people.
In addition, Spain has committed to providing Ukraine with a new aid package worth €1 billion, primarily aimed at supporting the shared production of defense equipment. Sánchez highlighted the significance of this project, stating it would include items like drones and radars.
Zelenskiy mentioned in the press conference that they had agreed on specific products to manufacture within their cooperative framework and noted ongoing discussions with European nations, including Spain, to ensure funding for production in Ukraine.
Furthermore, Zelenskiy pointed out the critical nature of unblocking the €90 billion in loans promised to Ukraine during the upcoming EU summit, insisting that resolving this issue is essential not just for Ukraine but for the entire European Union.
After his meeting with Sánchez, Zelenskiy is also scheduled to meet with King Felipe VI of Spain and other notable representatives from the Spanish Congress.
