Spain stunned by goalless tie with Cape Verde in FIFA World Cup group stage

Cape Verde Surprises Spain in World Cup Draw

Cape Verde, a small island nation off the African coast, celebrated a remarkable moment as their soccer team faced Spain in the FIFA World Cup. With a population of just over 524,800, this achievement likely brought immense joy to the country.

Spain, a strong contender in the tournament, only managed to secure a draw against Cape Verde, surprising many fans. The match, held on Monday, ended with both teams at 0-0, marking it as one of the biggest shocks of the tournament so far.

During the game, Cape Verde’s goalkeeper, Bosinha, who’s seen it all at 40 years old, was impressive. He faced a barrage of shots—seven on target from Spain—but managed to keep them at bay, while Cape Verde could only manage one shot on goal.

Spanish player Mikel Oyarzabal had a decent game, landing 5 of his 7 attempts. Even the young talent Lamine Yamal, who came off the bench, couldn’t find a way to score against the resilient Cape Verdean defense.

This draw means both teams earn a point, which, tbh, doesn’t set Spain up well for the future. They’ll be keeping a close eye on the upcoming match between Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.

Cape Verde is making its World Cup debut this year. Interestingly, the nation was part of Portugal when the World Cup first began. It wasn’t until 2002 that they started their pursuit for World Cup qualification, and this year’s tournament marked their first success in qualifying, coinciding with an increase in the number of participating teams to 48.

Currently ranked 67th among FIFA member nations, Cape Verde certainly has reasons to celebrate. In contrast, Spain, which won the World Cup back in 2010, had struggled in recent tournaments, failing to progress beyond the last 16 in the past two editions.

As fans across the globe digest this surprising draw, it’s safe to say that Cape Verde has made its mark in soccer history, even if it’s just the beginning.
