Virginia Governor Responds to Questions on Democratic Party Positions

During a recent appearance on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger (D) addressed whether Democrats should openly oppose candidates who support Hamas and advocate for defunding the police.

Co-host Andrew Ross Sorkin pointed out that Spanberger has not supported defunding the police nor expressed pro-Hamas sentiments. He noted, “But there are people in the Democratic Party advocating for defunding the police in support of Hamas. Should mainstream Democrats like you speak out against that or back Hamas?”

Spanberger replied, emphasizing her role as Virginia’s governor, stating, “Our community expects me to ensure safety, improve schools, and make life more affordable. This involves guaranteeing that our police, firefighters, and first responders are adequately compensated. Whether in larger cities or smaller towns, it’s crucial that each part of our community receives what it requires. We aim to be prepared throughout the entire state. Our first responders handle not just crime and fires but also natural disasters and crises.” She continued, “When I engage with potential candidates, my focus is on what resources are essential to keep our communities safe and enhance our educational systems. My commitment to investing in public safety and schools is unwavering. If we want effective public schools and safety, we must make substantial investments in both areas. The candidates I’ve supported in federal primaries share these values. Ultimately, we need clarity on what we desire: manageable costs, stronger schools, and safe neighborhoods.”
