Spanberger criticizes the Trump administration in her inauguration speech in Virginia

Abigail Spanberger Sworn in as Virginia’s First Female Governor

On Saturday, Abigail Spanberger took the oath as Virginia’s first female governor, and she seized the moment to voice her concerns about the Trump administration. Addressing the audience at the Capitol, she acknowledged the worries many have regarding the “recklessness” emanating from Washington.

Spanberger, who defeated Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earl Sears last November, highlighted local issues. “Many of you are feeling the impact of policies that threaten medical access, especially in rural areas, driving up costs,” she stated. Furthermore, she pointed to the adverse effects of federal policies on markets and innovation, emphasizing how they hurt dedicated public servants.

She continued, expressing concern about a government that prioritizes lavish projects while schools crumble around it. “Here we are, concerned about broken social safety nets and rising fears in communities—this undermines what it means to be American,” she said.

Spanberger shared insights on the increasing cost of living across Virginia—groceries, healthcare, child care, and housing are all becoming more expensive. “Families are feeling the pressure; it’s more challenging every day,” she remarked.

Reflecting on her upbringing, Spanberger recalled her parents’ teachings: “When faced with something unacceptable, you must speak out.” This was her call to action.

She acknowledged that not everyone may agree with her views on the challenges facing the state. “Your perspective may differ, but that won’t stop us from finding common ground,” she stated, highlighting the importance of collaboration.

A response from the White House to Spanberger’s remarks is still pending.

Before the inauguration, outgoing Governor Glenn Youngkin shared on social media that serving as governor was “an honor of a lifetime.”

Spanberger concluded by expressing her appreciation for those who have fought for women’s inclusion in the democratic process, underscoring the significance of this historic moment.
