Virginia’s New Governor-Elect Abigail Spanberger Celebrates Victory
Loudoun County, Virginia – Virginia’s governor-elect Abigail Spanberger expressed that her win against Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earl Sears “sent a message” to both the state and the country.
“Virginia chose pragmatism over partisanship. We chose commonwealth over chaos,” Spanberger stated during her victory speech.
She emphasized her focus on critical issues, saying, “You’ve chosen leadership that is relentlessly focused on what matters most: reducing costs, keeping our communities safe, and strengthening our economy for all Virginians.” Additionally, she acknowledged her historical role as Virginia’s first female governor.
Interestingly, Spanberger shared a personal moment when her husband, the first gentleman-elect, told their daughters, “Your mother is going to be governor of Virginia.” She noted, “Those words have never been said in Virginia.”
Reflecting on the campaign, she said, “Tonight we turned the page by listening, focusing on real results, presenting a clear agenda and leading with common sense and determination.” She also took a moment to recognize Earl Sears, thanking him for his “hard-fought race” and his service to Virginia.
Spanberger acknowledged that some who supported her opponent might feel disappointment. “My goal and intent is to serve all Virginians,” she reassured.
She highlighted Virginia’s identity as a “Commonwealth,” aligning it with the namesake of Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Massachusetts, and illustrated a desire for Virginians to come together for the common good.
During her speech, she also mentioned the state’s notable leaders, including Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison, remarking on Virginia’s historical role in American democracy.
Without directly naming him, Spanberger appeared to criticize former President Donald Trump, highlighting that federal actions are “costing Virginia jobs and creating uncertainty.” She stressed that Virginia’s economy suffers when Washington treats its workers as insignificant, asserting that the federal government is essentially creating “chaos.”
