Virginia Gubernatorial Race Updates
Abigail Spanberger, a Democratic candidate for governor in Virginia, hasn’t made a clear decision about supporting attorney general hopeful Jay Jones. However, her campaign seems to still be in his corner.
Interestingly, her official website is still selling merchandise featuring both Spanberger’s and Jones’ names, even amid some controversy that has sparked opposition within the Democratic party. Among the items available are a $10 bumper sticker and a $25 T-shirt, all showcasing the shared slogan “Spanberger, Hashmi & Jones.” Each product is marked with the note “Paid by Spanberger for the Governor.”
This joint branding is also visible on campaign billboards across Virginia, highlighting all three Democrats at the forefront of the state’s upcoming 2025 elections.
There are questions surrounding whether Spanberger will officially back Jones, but it seems the existing support on her website might be an indication of her stance.
Jones has faced scrutiny recently for issues stemming from reckless driving charges dating back to 2022. He reportedly used his political capital to fulfill court-mandated community service through his political action committee, which isn’t recognized as a nonprofit entity according to the Virginia State Board of Elections. This situation raised some legal concerns regarding his compliance with sentencing requirements.
In addition, Jones sparked fresh controversy from a text message he sent to Republican Representative Carrie Coyner back in 2022. In that message, he made a shocking comment about wanting to harm former House Speaker Todd Gilbert. Coyner also alleged that during a 2020 call, Jones suggested that the deaths of certain officers could prevent more killings.
During a recent gubernatorial debate, Spanberger sidestepped a direct question about whether she was aware of specific documents before they were made public. The question arose after Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle Sears inquired if she would continue to support Jones. It’s clear that the unfolding events pose challenges for Spanberger as she navigates her campaign.
