Spanish PM Sanchez plans to seek re-election in 2027 even with ongoing corruption investigations.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez declared on Wednesday his intent to seek reelection when his term wraps up in 2027. “I’m determined to run in the next general election in 2027,” he said during a press briefing.

In a twist of events, Sanchez is facing scrutiny due to an ongoing investigation linked to the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE). Although Sanchez has not been directly implicated, opposition parties have urged him to step down.

Earlier this month, Sanchez expressed regret after audio surfaced, suggesting that PSOE Secretary Santos Serdan had discussed questionable public contract awards in exchange for committee favors. This controversy has somewhat shaken the political landscape, prompting discussions about the integrity of the party.

Following these revelations, Serdan resigned from his position in PSOE as well as his congressional seat. Law enforcement is reportedly looking into the matter, even entering party headquarters to access Serdan’s emails.

Despite the unfolding scandals, Sanchez recently stated he wouldn’t call for new elections before his current term concludes. As part of this political environment, it’s worth noting that Sanchez is one of the longest-serving socialist leaders in Europe. His personal circumstances have also drawn attention: his wife, Begona Gomez, is under investigation for suspected business fraud, while his brother, David Sanchez, faces trial over alleged influence peddling.
