Speaker Johnson on Socialism and Communism: 'The Threats Are Already Here'

Concerns Over Socialism in Politics

On Saturday, House Speaker Mike Johnson from Louisiana appeared on Fox News Channel’s “Saturday in America” and expressed his concerns about Democratic candidates leaning toward socialism, suggesting this trend is increasingly alarming.

During his conversation with host Kayleigh McEnany, Johnson remarked that the success of “insurgent candidates” in Democratic primaries indicates that the Democratic Party is facing significant internal challenges.

McEnany referenced a quote about socialism, stating, “Socialism is the gateway to communism,” and asked Johnson if he believed that was an exaggeration.

“Absolutely,” Johnson replied, connecting the ideology to Marxism. He explained that Karl Marx viewed socialism as a necessary step toward achieving communism, which he described as an imagined perfect society. However, Johnson argued that the foundation of communism is fundamentally flawed, emphasizing that it contradicts American values. He stated, “We are one nation under God,” contrasting this with the premise of communism, which he believes denies the existence of God. Johnson noted that he provides a historical overview on his website, covering events from 1918 in Soviet Russia to contemporary issues in countries like China, India, and Venezuela.

He cautioned that communism ultimately leads to poverty and devastation, recounting its history of violence and human suffering. Johnson added that when candidates campaign by promising young people free benefits, it is enticing but misleading, as it often comes at the cost of their freedom. He stressed that the upcoming election presents a stark choice for Americans. Reflecting on the past, he suggested that a decade ago, the idea of questioning the existence of a constitutional republic in favor of a dangerous pathway to communism would have seemed absurd. Yet, he pointed out, this is the current reality, with radical left candidates gaining traction in Democratic primaries nationwide, a situation he described as very serious.
