House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) reportedly spoke to Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-La.) on Friday morning after failing to pass a spending deal approved by President-elect Donald Trump. , New York State) has reportedly been reopened.
Mr. Johnson's last negotiation with Democrats resulted in a deal that was widely criticized by all sides of the House Republican conference.
The terms of that deal were announced Tuesday night. By Wednesday, it had stalled, and President Trump stepped in to offer a last-minute alternative.
The deadline is Friday at midnight.
Punchbowl News reported that Mr. Jeffries told the caucus that he had resumed contact with Mr. Johnson.
Mr. Johnson's own lawmakers have harshly criticized him for working with Democrats on an early deal without fully consulting Republicans, and fear he may have a hard time keeping the gavel. Speculation is increasing.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) has already vowed to oppose Mr. Johnson. Rep. Rich McCormick (R-Ga.) said Wednesday that he would not support Mr. Johnson if the speaker's vote were held that day.
Mr. Johnson could not lose more than one vote on the floor in a roll call vote for speaker of the House.
Mr. Jeffries spent the morning spouting his usual talking points against “radical MAGA Republicans.”
With Mr. Johnson's future as speaker increasingly in doubt, the Republicans he mentioned are unlikely to take kindly to Mr. Johnson negotiating with Mr. Jeffries.
