Speaker Johnson says Democrats' 'sugar high' won't last

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said Democrats’ “sugar high” would be short-lived because of the party’s enthusiasm for Vice President Harris.

“So, obviously, Democrats are excited. Everybody recognizes that. And I think it’s going to become a reality after Labor Day,” Johnson told reporters at an event for Republican Joe Tailove in Minneapolis.CNN.

“I think Kamala Harris is going to face a real test,” Johnson said, according to CNN.

Tailove, who is seeking to unseat Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.), who is up for reelection in November, thanked Johnson for speaking with her outside the Minneapolis Police Department’s 3rd Precinct. In a post To social media platform X.

Johnson’s comments came after Harris formally accepted the Democratic nomination for the White House at last week’s Democratic National Convention.

“Now it is our turn to do what generations before us have done — to be guided by optimism and faith, to fight for the country we love, for the ideals we cherish, and to uphold the incredible responsibilities that come with the greatest privilege on earth, and the honor of being an American,” Harris said last week.

Harris has garnered enthusiastic support from within the Democratic Party since announcing her White House candidacy last month and is closing the gap on former President Trump in many national and battleground state polls.

According to The Hill/Decision Desk national polling average, which tallyes 133 polls, Harris leads Trump by 3.6 percentage points.

Johnson’s comments echo those of other lawmakers and commentators who have warned that Harris’ recent popularity surge is the result of a “honeymoon period” – something President Trump said earlier this month that would eventually come to an end.

“Everything she’s been involved in has gone bad. She’s incompetent,” Trump said at the time.

The Hill has reached out to Harris’ campaign for comment.
