Speaker Mike Johnson Addresses GOP Midterm Convention
On the second day of the Republican National Committee’s inaugural Midterm Convention, House Speaker Mike Johnson spoke about the upcoming elections in November, framing them as a crucial battle for the country’s future.
At the event in Dallas, which was organized at President Donald Trump’s request to energize the party’s base, Johnson focused on the need to sustain the slim Republican majority in the House of Representatives.
He stressed that keeping unified Republican control in Washington is vital for preserving the achievements of the Trump administration, like significant tax cuts and robust border security measures, from being reversed by a potential Democrat majority.
“The House has passed more than 900 pieces of legislation during this Congress, including the SAVE America Act four times—passing the largest tax cuts and spending cuts in American history,” he asserted.
Throughout his speech, Johnson underscored key themes of the event, such as economic growth, national security, and fiscal responsibility. He echoed the Trump administration’s messages, pointing to recent legislative efforts aimed at reducing government expenditure while keeping tax rates low.
“The media won’t tell you this, but this has been one of the most productive Congresses since 1789,” he proclaimed, calling it the most productive in 80 years.
Johnson also challenged the Democrats directly, arguing that shifting the balance of power in Congress would lead to aggressive oversight actions and legislative stagnation that would obstruct President Trump’s agenda for a second term.
“Republicans delivering and Democrats radicalizing. That is the contrast for America,” Johnson mentioned.
He highlighted that nearly every Democrat in the House recently voted against a resolution condemning socialism and Marxism, asserting that the party has been dominated by far-left radicals.
The Speaker praised House Republicans for their perseverance, emphasizing that conservative policies are the solutions to voters’ concerns about rising living costs and economic security.
In addition to addressing broad policy points, Johnson utilized his platform to reaffirm commitments to social issues. He expressed strong support for increasing restrictions on federal healthcare funding and continuing to limit financial assistance to organizations such as Planned Parenthood.
These legislative aims, along with border enforcement, were described as central to the GOP’s message, as Johnson encouraged delegates and grassroots activists to share this unified perspective as the midterm elections approach.
As he concluded his remarks, ahead of the evening’s keynote speakers—including Vice President JD Vance and President Trump—Johnson aimed to convey confidence, despite the historical challenges typically faced by the president’s party in midterm elections.
He motivated the audience with a prediction that the Republican base would defy historical trends by not only holding but potentially expanding their majority in the House.
Calling for urgency, he declared that every competitive congressional district is a “critical battle line” essential for maintaining the party’s momentum in Washington.
