Speaker Mike Johnson observes three years in office as midterm stakes rise

House conservatives lift blockade, securing a victory for Speaker Johnson

Three years ago today, a notable chapter came to an end in the annals of American political history. Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, took the reins of the House of Representatives following a unanimous decision from his fellow party members. This marked the conclusion of a tumultuous three-week period during which the federal government was effectively paralyzed. His predecessor, Kevin McCarthy, was ousted by factions within his own party, a historical first for a sitting House speaker.

Johnson, who only entered Congress in 2017, surprised many with his rapid rise to leadership. Known as the “accidental speaker,” he’s carved out a reputation as one of the more effective speakers in the House, especially considering the extremely narrow margin he governs with.

However, this three-year milestone arrives just as an election looms that could drastically change his political landscape—despite Johnson striving to fend off historical trends that typically see the ruling party lose ground.

“Over the last three years, despite numerous challenges in managing one of the smallest majorities ever, House Republicans have accomplished significant victories for Americans,” Johnson said in a recent conversation.

He noted achievements like the largest tax cuts for families in U.S. history, the addition of a million jobs in the private sector, cuts to wasteful spending amounting to $1.6 trillion, and effectively managing the border situation. He also mentioned reversing several Biden-era regulations, achieving the lowest violent crime rates in 126 years, and enacting the biggest drop in prescription drug prices in six decades.

It’s impressive, considering he’s achieved much with a majority that has fluctuated barely between one and four seats—a tightrope walk during a tenure that Newt Gingrich referred to as “the most challenging speakership since the Civil War.”

In addition to legislative victories, Johnson also highlighted record-breaking fundraising efforts and his relentless campaigning across the country for GOP candidates.

“I am immensely thankful to my colleagues for their trust as we fight to maintain our House majority. Serving as the 56th Speaker is truly a life honor,” he remarked.

During these three years, Johnson has also become one of the most effective fundraisers in GOP history, raising an astonishing $526 million this election cycle. Just before the upcoming election, he campaigned across more than 40 districts spanning 22 states, with an impressive 97% success rate for the candidates he endorsed in their primaries.

The pivotal question looming now is whether such efforts will suffice as Election Day approaches.

House Republicans face notable challenges in their attempt to preserve their majority. Historically, the party of the sitting president tends to lose seats during midterm elections, and President Donald Trump’s low approval ratings are expected to add to the difficulties for Republicans in closely contested races.

Despite these headwinds, Johnson has kept a positive outlook, though he’s been careful not to speculate about what might happen if the GOP loses control.

“If we were to lose our majority, it’s hard to say what would come next for me,” Johnson stated in a recent interview. “If destiny calls for me to go back to my hometown and run a lawn business, I’d gladly do so.”

Later, he expressed confidence that such a loss was unlikely, suggesting he would still be urged to continue his leadership role even in a divided government scenario.

The decision about whether his colleagues truly want him to continue leading will rest on how well Republican candidates perform in the elections—and, of course, how significant any potential losses might be.

Several GOP lawmakers previously indicated that, should Republicans fail to retain the House, Johnson might step back from his position. On the flip side, if they achieve victory, he would likely remain in his role, especially with support from Trump.

“Speaker Mike Johnson exemplifies the American Dream. He continues to defy expectations with a slim majority while advancing America First policies,” a Trump campaign message stated. “Once Republicans win in November, they should quickly re-elect Mike as Speaker.”
