House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, announced Wednesday he would postpone a vote on a stopgap spending bill because all Republicans in the House are opposed to the measure.
Johnson said A stopgap spending bill that would have funded the government until March 28 was delayed because Republican leaders needed to work on “consensus building” through the weekend.
The bill also includes the Protecting American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require proof of citizenship in order to vote in federal elections.
All Republicans in Congress have voiced opposition to the bill.
Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Alabama) opposed the bill, saying it would harm defense spending.
Conservatives have balked at the stopgap spending bill, saying it doesn't do enough to alleviate America's spending problems.
Rep. Corey Mills (R-Fla.) said:
How can we continue these continuing resolutions knowing that they are leading to economic collapse and trying to play politics with policy attachment resolutions that we know are not prepared to actually see the fight to the end?
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) said:
Speaker Johnson is waging a fake fight to vote for an extension of the Biden/Harris budget over the Save the House Act, which he already passed in July. The American people are tired of being lied to. Speaker Johnson needs to be honest with the American people about what he will or will not do on September 30th. Conservatives like me are genuinely interested in cutting spending and using our fiscal power to do the right thing for the American people.
“I refuse to be an actor in the Speaker's failed drama,” Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) said Monday. “A six-month continuing resolution. [CR] What the SAVE Act comes with is an insult to the intelligence of the American people. CR will not cut spending and the shiny object that comes with it will be tossed out like a hot potato before it even gets passed.”
“Production of this week's flop has been postponed! This week's CR poll has been canceled. Thank you to everyone who shared my speech from Monday,” Massey said. Written on wednesday.
