The “simplified” indictment follows a Supreme Court ruling in July that gave the president immunity from prosecution for “official acts” that substantially support Trump.
According to the Office of Special Counsel, this “reflects the government's efforts to respect and implement the Supreme Court's ruling and remand instructions.”
He also argues that the latest indictment “was presented to a new grand jury that has never previously heard evidence in this case.”
Last August, Trump was charged with conspiring to defraud the United States, attempting to obstruct an official proceeding, obstructing an official proceeding and conspiracy against the rights of others.
The new indictment retains the same charges but reduces them from the original to take into account the Supreme Court ruling.
Trump has denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump called the allegations against him “absurd” and said they “should be immediately dismissed.”
