Special forces soldier who blew up Cybertruck outside Trump hotel in Las Vegas used generative AI: cops

LAS VEGAS – The decorated soldier who detonated a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas used generative AI, including ChatGPT, to plan the attack, Las Vegas police said Tuesday.

Almost a week after 37-year-old Matthew Libersberger shot himself shortly before his truck exploded, his laptop, cell phone and watch are still under review.

A review of Livelsberger's searches through ChatGPT shows he was looking for information about explosive targets, how fast certain munitions were moving, and whether fireworks were legal in Arizona.

Libersberger, an Army Green Beret who twice deployed to Afghanistan and lived in Colorado Springs, Colo., left a memo saying the explosion was intended as a “wake-up call” to the country's troubles, officials said. It was announced last week.

He left a note on his cell phone saying he needed to “purify my heart by thinking about my brothers who died and be freed from the burden of the lives they took.”

The explosion caused minor injuries to seven people, but caused virtually no damage to the Trump International Hotel. Authorities said Libersberger acted alone.

Libersberger's letter touched on domestic and international issues, including political grievances, social problems, and the war in Ukraine. He wrote that the United States was “terminally ill and headed for collapse.”

Livelsberger also looked at the speed at which certain ammunition passed through ChatGPT.

Investigators were trying to determine whether Libersberger was trying to make a political statement, given Tesla and the hotel named after the president-elect.

Law enforcement officials said Libersberger harbored no ill will toward President-elect Donald Trump. In one of his memos, he said the country needed to “bring together” him and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
