Spectator at Red Sox game pours milk over their head in an enthusiastic celebration

Do you have any milk handy?

One enthusiastic Red Sox fan certainly did.

Or at least, he made a memorable appearance as Jaren Duran helped cut Boston’s deficit during the first inning of Saturday’s game at home.

Then something surprising occurred.

A fan appeared with a jug of milk in hand, right after Duran crossed home plate, as others celebrated around the rain-soaked Fenway Park.

He removed the top and — well, did he start chugging it?

Nope.

Maybe a hint was his Indianapolis 500 t-shirt, which was a shade of green, fitting with the Red Sox City Connect uniforms.

Instead of drinking, fans poured milk over him, some even managed to get a bit into his mouth.

This playful act seems to trace back to 1936, when Indianapolis 500 winners celebrated by drinking milk post-victory.

Though honestly, more of it ends up splashed on faces than consumed.

Two-time defending champion Josef Newgarden aims for a three-peat at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this Sunday.

Similar to the FS1 broadcast of the Red Sox-Orioles game, the Indianapolis 500 will also air on Fox channels.

If that felt like some cross-promotion, the announcer, Kevin Kugler, certainly made it interesting.

“Wait, hold on,” he exclaimed. “Oh my goodness! Josef Newgarden might really want that milk if he gets a three-peat at the Indy 500 on Sunday. How about that guy? Toss in a half-gallon of milk!”

And do you think Eric Karros, his co-announcer, was thinking, “I’m not so sure this is a great idea?”

Ultimately, the Red Sox triumphed, winning 6-5 in 10 innings thanks to a walk-off single from Rafael Devers.
