Spencer Jones Embraces His Game

Spencer Jones referred to himself as a “cold bird,” but his behavior during his initial time in the Bronx suggested otherwise.

“It’s my first time, but I’m really trying hard to adapt,” the outfielder said on Wednesday. “For me, I’m usually a calm bird. I just need to chill and let things happen naturally; I don’t want to force anything.”

After returning home on July 26, he chose to be himself, and the positive outcome spoke volumes.

In a recent game, the Yankees secured a 10-5 win against the Mariners, thanks in part to Jones’s impressive performance—he recorded two doubles and drove in three runs—marking the Yankees’ fourth win in five games.

Jones has been particularly effective with runners in scoring position, boasting a .981 OPS over 46 at-bats in such situations. His approach when there are players on base is quite straightforward.

“I think, from an early age, I learned that having runners on base actually takes the pressure off for me at the plate, especially for the pitcher,” Jones shared. “That’s just how I view it. But, you know, if they manage to get you out, that’s just part of the game. The key is to focus on doing your job and waiting for the right pitch to hit.”

His recent performance has continued to speak volumes—particularly with a two-run double during a game against the Braves, and earlier, he significantly reduced a three-run deficit with yet another double.

“He’s working on some adjustments, especially considering his size, strength, speed, and natural power,” manager Aaron Boone commented. “When he makes contact, it’s hard hitting.”

“I think he’s doing well at being a pro at the plate every day,” Boone added. “He’s really coming to understand his strengths and weaknesses. He’s developed a good game plan while recognizing what the pitchers bring to the table, showing that he can adapt at this level, which is promising.”
