Spike Lee Expresses Confusion Over Trump and Mamdani’s Meeting

During an appearance at the Toronto Film Festival on Saturday, filmmaker Spike Lee voiced his confusion regarding the recent amicable meeting between President Donald Trump and New York Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani. This joint press conference took place in the Oval Office on Friday.

Lee, known for his criticism of Trump, remarked on the surprising friendliness displayed between the two, given their previous fraught exchanges during Mamdani’s mayoral campaign. “During the election, I called Trump a communist and warned that New York City would decline,” he shared. “The president had threatened to cut off federal funding, so… honestly, I’m perplexed.”

Reflecting on Trump’s past statements regarding Mamdani’s potential win, Lee speculated, “If Mamdani won, what would that mean for New York City?” He added, “It seems they’ve found some common ground, which is interesting.”

Lee touched on the predictions made by some that New Yorkers would flee the city if Mamdani took office. “I’m curious about the real numbers on that,” he quipped.

As the 2024 presidential election looms, Lee characterized Trump’s chances at re-election as a “doomsday scenario.”

At the press conference, Trump maintained a tone of unity, asserting that both he and Mamdani share a vision for a better New York City. “We all have one thing in common,” Trump stated. “We want this city that we love to thrive.” He praised Mamdani for his campaign efforts and expressed his intent to support him.

Trump emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, “I think he’d be a really great mayor if he can achieve that.” He mentioned shared goals like making living costs more manageable for New Yorkers.

Mamdani expressed gratitude for the meeting, highlighting its focus on enhancing conditions in the city and assisting families facing economic challenges.
