Spike Lee Criticizes Trump at Cannes Film Festival

Spike Lee Critiques Trump’s Tariff Proposal at Cannes

Director Spike Lee recently voiced his concerns regarding President Donald Trump’s plan to impose 100% tariffs on foreign film imports during the ongoing Cannes festival.

During a panel discussion for The highest 2 is the lowest, Lee was prompted to share his views on the adverse effects of social media on society. Surprisingly, he transitioned the conversation to criticize Trump instead.

“I don’t know how much I can discuss America’s values considering who our president is,” he stated emphatically. “My wife advised me, ‘Spike, be cautious about your words!’ But here, I don’t think we can solely blame social media for the issues we face.”

Lee went on to address the tariff situation, expressing concern for those affected by it. “No one is working,” he lamented. “The president just mentioned wanting to impose tariffs on every film made… I’m unsure how that will actually play out.”

“People are hurting,” he continued. “With these tariffs on every film produced outside the U.S., I honestly don’t know how that would work. There’s no clear solution. But I do love making films in New York. Some things can’t be replicated—the atmosphere, the energy. I’m incredibly fortunate to have created a film there.”

Lee isn’t the sole critic of Trump’s tariff proposal. Director Wes Anderson also weighed in, humorously questioning how one could even “have a movie at customs.”

Scott Jones, from Artist View Entertainment, remarked, “We don’t see any benefit in what he’s trying to implement. This could genuinely hurt us.”

Louise Lantagne, who leads the Canadian film industry group Quebecreatif, pointed out, “It’s going to be chaotic if this happens. Right now, it’s just a tweet, despite the tension it has caused.”

Similarly, director Richard Linklater criticized Trump’s idea, asserting, “That won’t happen. He changes his mind constantly. Film is our leading export.”
