Actor Robert De Niro and film director Spike Lee have expressed concern that the election between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris could be “very close.”
Lee and De Niro, who have been critical of Trump since he first ran for president in 2016, spoke out against him during a question-and-answer session following a screening of legendary director Francis Ford Coppola's latest film. MegalopolisDe Niro drew parallels between the film and the election, saying Republican President Donald Trump must be defeated this November.
“You see Francis' film making that point and the parallels and all that. To me, it's not over until it's over. We have to put our heart and soul into defeating Republicans, and defeating Trump because Republicans are not real Republicans, that's it. That person is not tolerated. Everybody has to go out and vote,” De Niro said.
During the Q&A, De Niro also said the former president “can't do anything” and “can't get anything together.”
“He wants to destroy the country,” he claimed.
Lee encouraged people to “register to vote and go to the polls.”
“This election is going to be very close. I'm a big sports fan and, to use the expression I used earlier, it's not over until it's over. Don't think the game's over before it's over,” Lee said.

While De Niro and Lee's comments were overtly political, Coppola offered a more nuanced perspective, arguing that sometimes people “just don't agree.” Coppola has made it clear in past interviews that he cast certain actors, like Trump supporter Jon Voight, to get a message across about dialogue. He also said, rolling stone He didn't want his film to be seen as “a woke Hollywood production that just preaches to the audience.”
“What I didn't want was for us to be seen as some woke Hollywood production where we're just preaching to the audience. We have people in the cast who've been canceled at some point. Some are far-right, some are extremely politically progressive. But we're all working together on one film. I thought that was interesting,” he said.
