Lynchburg Fire Department responded to a most unusual call on February 3rd.
The stream had mysteriously turned white.
It was soon discovered that the creek near Westover Dairy, a dairy plant, had actually been contaminated by an “unidentified amount of waste milk” that had been accidentally released into the creek.
“This morning, a citizen called 9-1-1 to report that the creek near the 1300 block of Hendricks Street was nearly white in color,” the Lynchburg Fire Department wrote on its Facebook page on Saturday, February 3. Ta.
Lynchburg is located in central Virginia, just over 100 miles west of Richmond.
It is home to several universities, including Liberty University.
The mystery of White Creek was quickly solved.
“Crews determined the cause was a blockage in the Westover drainage line, which caused waste milk to overflow into the storm drain and further into the creek,” the fire department said.
The fire department continued, “The lines have been removed and the overflow has stopped.”
The department added that water resources authorities have been notified about the incident.
And despite the worrisome color of the water, everything seems to be in order.
The Lynchburg Fire Department said there was “no public health threat.”
The fire department’s post has been shared dozens of times on Facebook, mostly sparking amused reactions.
“Grocery prices have been going up lately so I’m running to the stream with a few gallon jugs of water!!” one Facebook user joked.
Some joked that now was the time to put chocolate syrup in the stream to make the most of the situation.
Another Facebook user assessed the situation more bluntly, writing, “It must stink.”
There were no reports of people crying after seeing spilled milk.
