There’s word that the White House is exploring a proposal to acquire Spirit Airlines and possibly repurpose part of its fleet for military operations. This plan suggests that President Trump might utilize the Defense Production Act to loan funds to the struggling airline for national defense use, as reported recently.
The idea is for the Pentagon to tap into Spirit’s surplus capacity to move troops, supplies, and undertake other missions, with insights drawn from unnamed sources. However, for this approach to proceed, Spirit’s creditors would need to give their consent, which could be tricky.
Spirit Airlines has a reputation for its distinctive yellow planes and budget fares, but it’s faced bankruptcy twice within the last two years. The current financial climate is dire, worsened by rising jet fuel prices linked to ongoing conflicts. To illustrate, Spirit forecasts fuel costs at about $2.24 per gallon in 2026, dipping to $2.14 in 2027, although the prevailing average now is significantly higher, around $4.30 per gallon.
During a recent bankruptcy hearing, Spirit’s legal team cautioned that the airline might only have a few days left to keep its operations running. Reports indicate they’ve recently failed to meet some interest payments, which raises the specter of creditors potentially seeking a default, risking asset liquidation.
Interestingly, President Trump has shown a willingness to assist the airline, mentioning in a press briefing, “We’re considering a buyout to help them.” He elaborated that a successful deal would allow Spirit to operate without debt, as they possess valuable assets that could be sold once oil prices stabilize.
Details hint that the Trump administration could be nearing a deal to provide Spirit with up to $500 million in exchange for equity, as per the Wall Street Journal. However, both the White House and Spirit Airlines have yet to comment publicly on this evolving situation, with the White House press secretary suggesting that current discussions are speculative until officially addressed.
