Bob Costas Critiques Media’s Handling of Trump
Veteran sportscaster Bob Costas expressed criticism towards various media organizations regarding their interaction with former President Donald Trump during an event at Syracuse University on Monday night.
Costas argued against the decisions made by the president of ABC News and commented on the settlement related to E. Jean Carroll’s lawsuit. He also touched on Paramount’s approach to the “60 Minutes” lawsuit, terming both settlements as a “ransom.”
Costas pointed out that media companies have fundamental issues, often overlooking critical stories. He asserted that benefiting Trump should not drive media narratives. He posed, “If the answer to that reflects Donald Trump’s perspective, then it’s troubling. There are no true principles aside from those serving his interests. If the adjustment aligns with Trump’s values, we essentially remain stagnant.”
He suggested that, due to Trump’s position, journalists often feel compelled to validate two opposing views, even when one may not hold merit. “What’s unfortunate is that some responsible journalism feels they must present opposing sides, regardless of the truth,” he said.
Costas further argued that the need for objectivity shouldn’t compromise accurate reporting. “If someone claims something as outrageous as the earth being flat, there’s no need to entertain an alternative perspective to remain impartial,” he stated. “It’s simply not true that the President shows respect for foundational American values and decency.”
Additionally, Costas received the Fred Dressler Leadership Award for his significant contributions to public understanding of the media, as recognized by the Newhouse School.
