Spotify to Raise Premium Subscription Prices in Selected Markets

On August 4, 2025, Spotify announced plans to increase the monthly cost of its premium individual subscription starting in September. This move aims to boost profit margins for the streaming service.

The company’s stock reacted positively, surging nearly 8%, contributing to a remarkable 40% increase this year.

The new subscription price will be set at 11.99 euros (approximately $13.86), up from 10.99 euros, affecting regions such as South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the Asia-Pacific area.

Subscribers can expect an email next month detailing the price change.

Historically, past price hikes, along with recent cost-cutting measures, have enabled Spotify to achieve its first annual profit in 2024.

During the second quarter, the company saw an uptick in monthly active users and premium subscribers. However, increased payroll taxes led to a reported loss, which also affected profit expectations for the third quarter.

To attract more subscribers, Spotify has been expanding its video content library. This includes efforts through its partner program aimed at supporting podcast creators with monetization opportunities.

CEO Daniel Ek noted that many creators are now joining the Spotify Partner Program, contributing to a substantial growth in video content on the platform.

Additionally, Spotify has gained from Apple’s approval for a U.S. app update. This change allows the app to display subscription pricing and external payment links, following a ruling that prevents Apple from imposing its commission on off-app purchases.

Ek highlighted that this adjustment has led to a “very positive uptick” in the U.S., and if similar regulations are adopted in Europe and the UK, it could benefit Spotify and other app developers significantly.
