Spotify's managed accounts are now available in the US with updated parental controls.

Spotify is introducing a significant update aimed at parents seeking to manage their children’s music experiences more effectively. Initially tested in a few countries, the managed accounts have now made their way to the United States, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, and the Netherlands. These accounts create a safer and more tailored music experience for young listeners while allowing parents to oversee what is being played.

A safer way for children to enjoy music

The new managed accounts cater specifically to kids under 13 and provide a music-only experience through the standard Spotify app. Parents can use Family Plan settings to filter explicit lyrics, block particular artists and songs, and turn off videos and certain visuals. Unlike the more limited Spotify Kids app, these accounts operate within the main platform, giving children access to a familiar interface that includes features like Discover Weekly and Daily Mix, but with appropriate age restrictions.

How managed accounts work

For those with a Premium Family subscription, setting up a managed account is straightforward through the Spotify settings. Parents can simply select “Add members” and then choose “Add listeners under 13.” This way, they can control the content their kids access, while the children can still create their own playlists and receive music recommendations based on their activity. It ensures that a parent’s playlists remain free from unexpected additions, like random game soundtracks or viral meme songs.

Why is this important for parents?

For many parents, balancing their children’s musical freedom with avoiding explicit content has been a challenge. This update aims to address that concern. Managed accounts let parents disable videos, block podcasts, and prevent any adult material from seeping in. It’s a relief for families who enjoy streaming music together.

What this means for you

If you’re already using a Premium Family plan, this update enhances its value. You still have six individual accounts, now with the option to include customized child accounts. Parents can safely share their favorite tunes without worrying about exposing young listeners to inappropriate content. Kids can explore music and create playlists without affecting their parents’ account recommendations.

Essential points

Spotify’s development of managed accounts marks a commendable step towards providing a safer, family-friendly listening experience. It empowers parents to protect young ears while fostering a love for music. With robust parental controls embedded in the app, families can share musical moments together, feeling secure and connected.
