Victor Wembaneyama’s National Anthem Stance Sparks Controversy
In San Antonio, Texas, the recent situation surrounding Victor Wembaneyama’s stance during the national anthem has gained attention following the NBA Finals. Before Game 5 at the Frostbank Center, Wembaneyama was again seen with his arms crossed during “The Star-Spangled Banner,” similar to his stance in Game 1.
Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson was questioned about whether the team had spoken with Wembaneyama regarding the anthem. Surprisingly, he replied, “Absolutely not.” He noted that many players opt not to be on the court during the anthem for various reasons—be it superstition or a simple need for the restroom—without expecting any investigation into the matter.
This marks the Spurs’ first public comments after the unfolding controversy regarding Wembaneyama’s apparent decision to stay off the court during the anthem in earlier games. The event has become somewhat of a subplot in the Finals.
The uproar originated before Game 1 when cameras caught Wembaneyama standing with his arms crossed, a moment that quickly gained traction online. While some fans viewed this as disrespectful, others defended the young player.
Notably, during Games 3 and 4, Wembaneyama was absent from the court during ESPN’s national anthem broadcasts. While most teammates lined up, he was noticeably missing. Johnson did not clarify whether Wembaneyama had intentionally chosen to stay off the court.
OutKick scrutinized the broadcasts and found Wembaneyama included during the national anthem segments in the first two games, but absent from the next two. A significant change in the anthem presentation during Game 4 raises questions about a potential link to Wembaneyama’s absence.
For Game 5, the usual production setup returned, showing Wembaneyama alongside his teammates linking arms during the anthem.
This ongoing issue has been a point of inquiry for OutKick. Their attempts to get comments from the Spurs, NBA, and ESPN did not yield any explanations.
So, as Game 5 commenced, Wembaneyama and his interaction with the national anthem became a focal point once again. And even after all the talk, the controversy surrounding him remains unresolved.
The Spurs faced the Knicks in a critical Game 5, needing a win to prolong the series, while New York sought its first NBA championship since 1973. Yet, the national anthem and Wembaneyama continued to be pivotal parts of the narrative.
