Spurs want Kristaps Porzingis as Celtics plan their next major step

San Antonio Spurs Eyeing Potential Twin Towers

It looks like the Spurs are thinking about a new dynamic duo.

According to NBA insider Jake Fisher, San Antonio has engaged in “exploratory talks” regarding Boston Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis.

Standing at 7-foot-2, Porzingis could complement the 7-foot-3 sensation Victor Wembanyama, reminiscent of the legendary pairing of David Robinson and Tim Duncan from over two decades ago.

Interestingly, Fisher mentioned that the Spurs also demonstrated interest in Porzingis. This comes just a day after Boston made a significant trade, sending Jrue Holiday to Portland in exchange for Anfernee Simons and two second-round draft picks, effectively disrupting their championship core from last year.

The Celtics are reportedly focused on trimming their payroll to fall under a second apron, potentially saving millions in the process.

Meanwhile, San Antonio seems to be looking to bolster their roster after trading for former All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox before last season’s trade deadline.

Interestingly, the Spurs were among the teams on Kevin Durant’s radar, but he ultimately wound up being traded to Houston for Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks, plus a handful of draft picks.

Porzingis, aged 29, might serve as a backup option for San Antonio as they aim for a playoff run with Wembanyama. When healthy, he’s one of the more formidable big men in the league.

Last season, he played 42 games, averaging 19.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, and shooting 48.3% from the field, alongside 1.5 blocks per game and an impressive 41.2% from beyond the arc.

However, injuries have been a frequent hurdle in his career, with Porzingis exceeding 60 games in only two of his ten seasons.

The Spurs are expected to select Rutgers guard Dylan Harper with the second overall pick in Wednesday’s NBA Draft.
