Ilhan Omar’s Stark Remarks on Immigration Enforcement
During a recent gathering, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) expressed her grave concerns about immigration enforcement in the U.S. She stated that the country was “disappearing” individuals and sending them to “dungeons” globally.
“The reality is, when they come for one of us, they will ultimately come for all of us,” she said outside of City Hall in Nashville on Saturday. Omar reflected on the alarming trend of individuals being accused and sent to foreign prisons, leading to their unexplained disappearances.
At a rally in Antioch, there was little doubt the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) would be a hot topic. Organizers had put up signs stating that “ICE not permitted on the property.”
While reporters were present at a City Hall event alongside Democratic State Senator Justin Jones, it was surprising that the rally was portrayed differently. The event was advertised as a “Love of Your Neighbor” gathering, but reports indicated vastly different crowd estimates, varying from 200 to 500.
Omar noted the international shock regarding the U.S.’s actions, stating, “When they see these kinds of images coming out of America, it’s really shocking to them and it should be for all of us as Americans. It’s not us.” Her remarks seemingly resonated with the crowd as she highlighted the troubling images coming from the nation.
Members of the House “squad” were present, advocating for universal healthcare and suggesting cuts to military funding, including proposals for mask mandates for ICE agents during their operations.
Joined by Jones, who had previously labeled Nashville’s ICE operations as extreme and reminiscent of the Ku Klux Klan, Omar’s stance drew attention. However, it’s noteworthy that nearly 196 people arrested during recent ICE operations in Nashville had significant criminal backgrounds, with 95 having past convictions or current charges for serious offenses, including rape and drug-related crimes. Additionally, 31 individuals had previously been deported.
