One of the most vocal critics of the group of Democratic women lawmakers known as “The Squad” has again publicly criticized Joe Biden’s handling of the Gaza war that began with an ambush on Israelis on October 7.
On Saturday, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, a Democrat who represents a southeastern Michigan district, New York Post Tlaib made the remarks as a “surprise appearance” at the Palestinian People’s Conference. The conference, held at Detroit’s Huntington Place in what Tlaib described as “the most beautiful and blackest city in the country,” reportedly included speakers affiliated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a group designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. and other foreign governments.
“It is shameful and cowardly that the Biden Administration and my colleagues in Congress continue to smear these people as they protest to save lives. But will we forget come November?”
You can hear a clip of her remarks below. hereTlaib repeatedly criticized the Biden administration for its failed leadership, as she argued that America’s continued support for Israel has led to American schools being underfunded.
“Every bullet, every gun, every weapon, every bomb that we send out, is costing schools here in our country,” she said. “When I visit schools, many of them have trash bags over the water fountains because they don’t have clean water.”
“President Biden, we hope you’ve heard us loud and clear.”
She also said Israel’s retaliatory attack last week on Rafah, where many Palestinian refugees are believed to be sheltering, It didn’t result in massacres.“The International Court of Justice just ruled that the Israeli government must stop its invasion of Rafah,” she continued. “But President Biden… [inaudible] It’s not genocide.
“President Biden, where is your red line?”
Tlaib went so far as to claim that Biden had been an “enactor” of genocide by criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, as well as the International Criminal Court, which has indicted several Hamas leaders.
“Attacks on the authority of the International Criminal Court and interference with its legal process are nothing more than an attempt to prevent genocidal Prime Minister Netanyahu and senior Israeli officials from being held accountable for crimes against humanity,” she argued.
“President Biden, you’re an advocate.”
Biden recently hinted at restricting arms exports to Israel, but ultimately reiterated that the United States and Israel remain strong allies. “We will always stand with Israel against threats to its security,” he said.
Finally, Tlaib blasted Biden and other Democrats – whom she called her “colleagues” – for focusing on the violent protests that have erupted on college campuses across the country in recent weeks rather than the plight of the Palestinian people.
“They are more outraged. [about] “That is worse than the atrocities and war crimes that are happening right now on the ground,” she said, as the audience applauded and cheered.
She even argued that Democrats may soon lose significant political power due to their continued support for Israel: “It is shameful and cowardly that the Biden Administration and my colleagues in Congress continue to smear those who are protesting to save lives regardless of their faith or ethnicity. But we’re not going to forget in November, are we?”
Earlier this year, Tlaib called on Michigan Democrats to vote “independent” in the state’s primary, and it remains to be seen whether she will ultimately support Biden as he faces a potential second term.
The Biden-Harris campaign did not respond to The Washington Post’s request for comment.
