‘Squad’ Members Ilhan Omar, Cori Bush Confuse Memorial Day for Veterans Day

Squad members Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Rep. Cori Bush (D-Missouri) appear to confuse Memorial Day, which honors American service members who have died in battle, with Veterans Day, which honors those who have served.

Omar posted to X from her congressional account.

On #MemorialDay we honour the heroic men and women who served our country.

We owe them more than a debt of gratitude: They deserve access to quality mental health services, employment opportunities, housing assistance, and the benefits they were promised.

Bush posted on his CongressX account:

This #MemorialDay and every day, we honor St. Louis veterans.

We must invest in universal health care, affordable housing, comprehensive mental health services, and education and economic opportunity for veterans to build a world free of war and violence.

Both deleted the posts after being criticized by X users for not knowing the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

Both senators replaced their posts with ones related to Memorial Day.

Omar posted on her campaign account:

On Memorial Day, let us thank the brave men and women who dedicated their lives to our country. Let us also thank the families who gave their time and sacrifices to ensure their loved ones are remembered.

Bush posted on his congressional account:

On this #MemorialDay, we honour those who lost their lives serving our country and remember the loved ones they left behind.

As we work to build a world free of war and violence, we must continue our efforts to protect our military personnel.

Still, users responded with screenshots of the original post.

As of Monday afternoon, other members of the squad, including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York), Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Gregorio Casar (D-Texas), had not posted anything.

However, Squad members Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), Rep. Summer Lee (D-Pennsylvania), and Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-Ill.) all made Memorial Day posts honoring fallen soldiers.
