St. John’s Aaron Scott will play through thumb injury in Big East final

Aaron Scott definitely left.

He played on Saturday night, smacking on the right thumb and everything.

“A small thumb injury. Not too serious. The gritty St. John's forward said the gritty St. John's forward after top-seeded Johnny overwhelmed No. 5 Marquette 79-63 to reach his first Big East Tournament Final in 25 years.

Scott left the St. John's locker room, with his thumbs in a soft cast.

He hurt it late in the second half, came out and went back into the game, helping the Red Storm complete the victory.

Scott said his thumb was bent backwards, but it was not dislocated.

“I'm going to be there tomorrow,” he said. “There's nothing to stop me.”

Scott scored 11 points and four rebounds in 35/35 minutes. He took up a large portion of St. John's Rock Marquette after halftime, holding the Golden Eagles to 26 points in the final 20 minutes.

“[He’s a] Swiss army knife. It doesn't matter if his mouth is bleeding or not. His nose is gushing out, blood is gushing out all over his jersey, he's still going strong,” said RJ Luis Jr. “We need an entire team and A-Scott is one of those guys. You may not see those statistics on paper, but he brings a lot of energy and the guys feed him.”


Walterbury was excited to see Lewis join St. John's history with him as the first Big East Player of the Year in a program in 39 years. Berry was the last Johnny to win it in 1986.

“I'm very happy. Chris [Mullin] After I got Player of the Year, I came back and got it,” Berry said. “We were waiting for the next thing, but this guy here deserves him.

“He has a pro game. He's going to the NBA. [in the future]he has to spend a little more time. He'll be a good pro. ”

Lewis and Berry met for the first time in the winning St. John's locker room.

St. John's 29 wins is the program's most wins since 31 wins in 1985-86.
