St. John’s lands Ed Kull from Fordham to be new athletic director

From the beginning, Ed Cull was the leading candidate to become the next athletic director at St. John's University.

From the moment news broke in the spring that the school was parting ways with Mike Klug, Cal's name came up multiple times for two specific reasons: his success in fundraising and his history as an athletic administrator at St. John's.

Officials confirmed Wednesday that Kall, who served as Fordham University's athletic director for the past three years, has accepted the job.

Cull worked at St. John's University from 2011 to 2017, during which time he also served as associate director of athletics.

There was a lot of interest in the job, but Cal was the obvious choice given his knowledge of Queens, his strong relationship with top athletic booster Mike Lepore and his fundraising strength.

The Queens student raised $7.6 million at Fordham University during the fiscal year that ended in June, a record for the school.

That skill set was especially important in the name, image and likeness (NIL) era and the potential for revenue sharing with athletes that is expected to occur in the near future.
