The impact of St. John’s University’s recent NCAA Tournament defeat is unfolding. After the Red Storm’s 80-75 Sweet 16 loss to Duke, captain Sadiq Ibine Ayo announced he plans to enter the transfer portal, as reported by Zach Braziler on Monday.
Ayo has maintained a “very close” bond with head coach Rick Pitino. Braziler noted that Pitino is encouraging him to “consider his options,” especially in terms of playing time and NIL opportunities.
The 6-foot-6 forward first connected with Pitino during his freshman season at Iona College, right before Pitino took over St. John’s in 2023. However, due to a foot injury, Ayo managed to play only five games that year and has struggled to secure a stable spot in the Red Storm lineup since.
This season, Ayo participated in 30 out of 37 games but averaged less than eight minutes per game. As he approaches his final year of eligibility, he seems eager for a more substantial role on the team.
Reflecting on St. John’s remarkable season after the Duke game, Pitino expressed his disappointment. The team achieved a significant milestone by reaching the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1999.
In an emotional address, Pitino praised his players, declaring them one of the best groups he’s ever coached. He remarked that their mindset was unique and probably couldn’t be replicated.
“This is one of the most distinct teams I’ve been part of in 52 years,” Pitino shared. He recently signed a contract extension, adding another year to his existing deal with the program. “There was never any altercation between the players… They were willing to do whatever it took to win.”
In a heartfelt conclusion, he added, “They were just the greatest kids in the world. Please don’t do it again. My heart breaks for them.”
A few days post-ceremony, Pitino’s words seem to resonate even more profoundly.
