St. John’s Red Storm coach Rick Pitino on Sunday night threw out the metrics used to determine seeding in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, leaving his team out of the field of 68.
The Red Storm’s NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET) ranking was No. 32. This formula is used to evaluate a team’s tournament resume.

“Remaining elements include the Team Value Index (TVI), an results-based feature that rewards teams for wins against quality opponents, especially away from home, and an adjusted net efficiency rating.” says the NCAA on its website.
“Adjusted efficiency is the net efficiency of a team adjusted for the strength of the opponent and the location (home/away/neutral) of all matches played. For example, If your efficiency value (net points per 100 possessions) is higher than your team’s efficiency, then maintaining the same efficiency against a lower-ranked opponent will result in a constant efficiency on the road compared to your team’s efficiency at home. The same efficiency is higher.”
But Pitino didn’t want to hear anything about the metrics after watching the selection show.

“We all think that word (NET) is deceptive and should probably never be mentioned again,” he said. “My son (New Mexico coach Rich Pinto) was 25 years old at NET and he said 25 wins was not enough for him.
“I don’t think we need to mention NET anymore. I think we were strong enough schedule-wise. KenPom (rankings). Why mention him? In KenPom we was 26 years old. We tried to play a tough schedule, we tried to do things the right way and it didn’t work out. But I never make excuses. I I respect the work of the committee.”
Pitino said the team will not play in the NIT. Instead, he plans to focus on recruiting.
It wasn’t all St. John’s fault that they missed the tournament. North Carolina State had a magical run in the ACC Championship Saturday night, stealing the automatic berth from a team that had hoped to be an at-large selection.
