St. John’s uses familiar recipe for success in third straight win

Wednesday night's win was a microcosm of St. John's season thus far.

It starts slow and finishes fast.

The Johnnys were inconsistent in the first half, but often showed strong performances after halftime.

Their three-game winning streak followed a similar pattern.

For the first 20 minutes, they were shaky, their defense was a step behind and they were lax on the glass. Then the flip switched.

St. John's shocked Bryant with a ferocious 21-3 run that turned a one-point deficit into an 18-point deficit with 8:48 remaining.

From there it was academic, and Johnny cruised to a 99-77 victory.

Zuby Ejiofor led the way, continuing his recent dominant performance with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

RJ Lewis and Aaron Scott (10 rebounds) each had 17 points, followed by Simeon Wilcher and Davon Smith with 14 points each.

Overall, they outscored their opponents by 99 points after intermission, with the only exception being a double-overtime loss to Baylor, which was minus-14 in the second half.

That happened Saturday against Kansas State, when St. John's exploded for 53 points, and in several of its bye games (games where lower-level opponents pay for a trip to Queens).

Johnny has regularly operated with different levels of focus, intensity and determination.

The same thing happened against Bryant. After halftime, St. John's was plus-14 on the glass, plus-10 in the paint and forced 11 turnovers from Bryant.

After treating the first 25 minutes or so like a scrimmage, the Red Storm showed up.

A 21-3 run, including nine points by Ejiofor, set the game in motion.

Most importantly, the defense stepped up to the forefront.
