St. John’s wins first Big East regular season title in 40 years with win over Seton Hall

St. John's made fans wait 40 years for another Big East regular season championship and sweated for the clincher.

What, did you think it would be easier?

That certainly wasn't the case against Seton Hall, who had seven wins.

It's rarely easy for this team, but as has been the case throughout this magical season, Johnny has found a way to win.

The seventh-placed Red Storm overcame an offshoot night from star guards Caddary Richmond and Davon Smith, winning Aaron Scott for the first time since 1984-85, winning the Pirates in the Sold Out Garden 71-61.

Zuby Ejiofor and RJ Luis were two key returners in manager Rick Pitino's first season, combining 38 points and 6 rebounds, while Sadiku Ibine Ayo added eight points and five rebounds from the bench in place of Scott.

St. John's dominated the final 10:01, outscoring Seton Hall, ages 22-12 from that point.

The Pirates managed just five points in the past 5:22.
