St. John’s wins first Big East Tournament championship in 25 years

The second half of Saturday night was neatly packed with this amazing season into a 20-minute fantastic minute portion.

The gardens filled with St. John's fans sound like a building like it was in 1985.

RJ Luis Jr., Kadary Richmond and Zuby Ejiofor took over Creighton to take over and off like good teammates in this 82-66 thrilling Big East Tournament Championship game victory.

As that run began, the second seeded Blue Jays took place like this red storm winter joy winter, just like Marquette the night before.

It started with a oddly technical foul on Lewis after he sunk the 3-pointer. Junior celebrated too.

Stephen Ashworth pulled Clayton within two. Then came the avalanche of St. John. A 18-5 burst that began with Richmond's consecutive baskets and concluded with Lewis' layup.

Reed was now 15 years old. St. John's is heading for his first Big East Tournament title in 25 years, and perhaps heading for the second seed in the NCAA tournament.

Lewis, the school's first Big East Player of the Year since Walterbury in 1986, poured 27 points with 29 points, with 27 coming after halftime.

The day after setting the St. John's Big East Tournament record at 33 points, Egiofor added 20 points, 12 rebounds and four assists.

In the second half, St. John's exploded 57 points with a 71.9% shooting and hit 14 shots on one spectacular stretch.

Four-inning Big East defensive player of the year Ryan Calkbrenner was a non-factor in the final 20 minutes, with St. John's stacking 50 points against 7-foot-1 center.

The start was similar to the Friday night when St. John's tracked Marquette by the age of 15.

It was soon 10-2 Clayton, with Johnny already facing a deficit due to the first media timeout.

They missed the first six shots and Clayton hit seven of his first eight shots.

The Blue Jays cooled from there, losing 14 of their next 16 attempts, but still had a three-man lead.

The Red Storm struggled violently from the field and shot 33.3%. Lewis and Simeon Wilcher each misfire on four of their five shots, while St. John's did not attempt a single free throw in the opening 20 minutes.

Kalkbrenner controlled the paint as he normally would, and the Red Storm became impatient and took a quick jumper.

Ejiofor led with 7 points but needed eight shots to get there. St. John's had not scored a single point in the transition and was limited to three second points with six offensive rebounds.

Lewis pulled St. John's with a three-pointer early in the second half.

Johnny made his first advance with the remaining Vince Iuvchukw basket at 11:55. Richmond pushed the lead up to three with his next possession, and the crowd became as loud as the whole night.

Lewis took the basket and pushed the lead into five, but the shot clock expired and Isaac Trough hit a frenzied jumper from the left corner as Jamiyaneel added a dunk in transition to pull the Blue Jay within one.

There was 9:05 left in the Big East season, and the two best teams had nothing to decide.

St. John's is on the way from the timeout. Lewis sunks a 3-pointer. Richmond scored on consecutive drives.

Lewis finished with paint. Reed is now eight years old and Clayton called for a timeout, trying to quiet the yard and change momentum.

It didn't work. The lead will soon be double. Soon, St. John's celebrates another championship.
