Macin Wynn, a standout player for the St. Louis Cardinals, found himself in a car accident just hours after achieving his first game-winning hit against the New York Mets on Wednesday afternoon.
The 24-year-old shortstop was reportedly driving on Interstate 64 near St. Louis when the single-vehicle crash occurred. The team addressed the situation in a statement, expressing gratitude for his safety and appreciation for the first responders who came to assist him.
The accident was attributed to wet road conditions. Wynn was driving alone at the time, but fortunately, police and medical staff from the Cardinals arrived promptly to help him.
He was taken to a nearby hospital for observation but thankfully did not suffer serious injuries, being released shortly afterward.
There’s still some uncertainty regarding his availability for the Cardinals’ game in Detroit on Thursday afternoon.
In the dramatic conclusion of the game, Wynn delivered a crucial hit in the 11th inning, clinching a 2-1 victory for the Cardinals and making the series score 2-3.
This was Wynn’s first walk-off win since he debuted with the team in August 2023. Ironically, he also registered his initial major league hit against the same Mets team just a few weeks prior, an infield hit that became notable when then-Mets first baseman Pete Alonso threw the ball into the stands.
In response to that mishap, Alonso—now with the Orioles—sent Wynn a bottle of 1942 tequila along with an autographed bat as a gesture of goodwill. “I just wanted to send something because I didn’t want him to think anything,” Alonso explained at the time. “I just wanted to send him something.”
The fan who caught the rogue ball graciously returned it to Wynn and the Cardinals.
