Investigation Launched After Fatal Stabbing in California Mall
Police are looking into a tragic incident where a woman was fatally stabbed in a shopping mall parking lot located in a California beach town. The victim, identified as 73-year-old Rachel Summers from Capitola, was discovered with multiple stab wounds just outside the food court at Capitola Mall around 1 PM on Monday.
This mall is situated a little over a mile from Capitola Beach, a well-known resort area in Santa Cruz.
Authorities reported that a 19-year-old named Tyler Liebert has been arrested in connection with the stabbing.
According to the police, they believe the attack was random, stating that there appears to be no prior connection between the suspect and the victim.
Court documents indicate that Liebert faces multiple felony charges, including murder. Notably, one of the allegations suggests that he might have been involved in a previous felony, which could lead to stricter sentencing if convicted in this case.
Summers was an established local artist who managed the Art of Santa Cruz Museum, which has temporarily closed in light of her death. The police department expressed their condolences, stating, “Our hearts are with Rachel’s family, friends, and all those affected by this tragic and senseless act of violence.”
The investigation is still active, and more details are expected to emerge as authorities continue their work.
