Stacey Abrams Discusses Democracy and Authoritarianism on CNN

Stacey Abrams, the former candidate for governor in Georgia, appeared on CNN recently to address the implications of the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA. She suggested that this tragic event is being used by the Trump administration as a pretext for pushing towards authoritarianism.

Abrams emphasized the need to be cautious, stating, “This is really about American dictatorship versus democracy. If we get caught up in this false narrative, we risk losing the democratic freedoms we hold dear, including freedom of speech. We must not let such a horrific act be a justification for advancing authoritarian control.” She is concerned that this situation represents a significant step towards dictatorship, as outlined in her framework regarding political violence.

Kirk was tragically killed last week while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University, shot in a public setting. His death left many shocked and mourning, as he was only 31 years old and a father of two.

In response to Abrams’ comments, a spokesperson from the White House, Abigail Jackson, criticized her, arguing that Abrams is perpetuating radical leftist rhetoric that drives Democratic voters. Jackson remarked, “Instead of addressing the tragedy, she doubles down on divisive language.” Earlier this year, Abrams had used similar rhetoric on the “Jimmy Kimmel Live” show, indicating that the U.S. was in a critical phase of authoritarian behavior.

On Tuesday, Abrams reiterated her claims on CNN, stating that Trump and his administration have turned Washington, D.C. into a place of “military occupation,” implying a higher level of control over the public. She expressed her belief that the American public mistakenly thinks the country is immune to dictatorship due to its foundational principles.

Concluding her thoughts, Abrams stressed that the current climate is reminiscent of troubling historical patterns, warning that scholars have identified ten steps leading to dictatorship, and the U.S. is dangerously close to those stages.
