Staff Cuts Are First Step to Ending DOE, But We’ll Need Congress, Might Do Block Grants to States

On Fox News Channel's “Ingraham Angle” broadcast on Tuesday, Education Secretary Linda McMahon said cutting the Department of Education staff was the first step to shutting down the department completely, but “I know we have to work with Congress to achieve that,” and she hopes to go with the money to the US.

Host Laura Ingraham asked, “Is this the first step on the road to a complete shutdown now?”

McMahon replied. “Yes, in fact, that's true. It was the president's mission, so obviously, to shut down the Ministry of Education, as it was directed at me. But what we did today was to take the first step to eliminate what I think is bureaucratic bloat. And that's not that there are a lot of people – it's humane for a lot of people out there, they're losing their jobs. But we wanted to keep all the right people and the good people, and make sure that the outward programs, grants, the spending that comes from Congress, all of that is met.

McMahon added.[S]oMany of the programs are really good. You need to make sure that money reaches the state. But we want to make sure more money can go to the state. That's what the president has said all along. Remove bureaucracy and the state will gain more. It enters the state directly. …Perhaps blocking grants that don't have so many strings or red tape attached. ”
