Stan Verrett Departs ESPN After 25 Years
The journalism landscape has transformed significantly since Stan Verrett joined ESPN roughly 25 years ago.
This change is particularly evident as veteran “SportsCenter” hosts step back from their roles at the network.
“Our business has evolved greatly since I started. I adapted to that,” Verrett shared on X Tuesday night. “Luckily, there are some exciting opportunities waiting for me in my adopted hometown of Los Angeles.”
Verrett and ESPN are parting ways after a strong partnership, as Front Office Sports reports that his contract will not be renewed this summer.
At 59, Verrett made a name for himself as a late-night host on “SportsCenter.”
He took on the 1 AM slot starting in 2009, primarily alongside Neil Everett, before concluding his time with the network in 2023.
One factor in this decision appears to be his Los Angeles residence, especially as the network has shifted the “SportsCenter” show from there to Bristol, Connecticut.
“My life is based in Los Angeles,” Verrett clarified on X after news of his departure surfaced.
“I’m not leaving ESPN feeling ungrateful. Instead, I’m looking forward to new opportunities. Stay tuned!”
Verrett also noted the outpouring of support regarding his upcoming departure.
“I’m truly moved by all your messages. It’s really touching,” he expressed on X.
ESPN acknowledged Verrett’s significant contributions over the years.
“We appreciate everything Stan has brought to SportsCenter,” ESPN EVP Dayve Roberts commented to Front Office Sports. “We wish him the best as he moves forward.”
