Vanderveer began her head coaching career at the University of Idaho during the 1978-1979 season, when the University was in the Women's Intercollegiate Athletics Association. She coached the Vandals for two seasons before joining Ohio State before the 1980-1981 season.

She led Ohio State to three NCAA Tournament appearances in five years. After she led the Buckeyes to a 28-3 record and an Elite Eight appearance, VanDerveer made the jump to Stanford in 1985, and she has been with the Cardinal ever since.
“This is a tremendous accomplishment for Tara VanDerveer, already one of the greatest coaches in basketball history,” Krzyzewski said in a statement. “This is another milestone to add to an incredible legacy. More important than her incredible numbers and career accomplishments is the positive impact she has had on countless lives as a coach and mentor. Tara continues to be a true guardian of our sport.”
Vandevere won three NCAA championships and appeared in the Final Four 12 times as head coach at Stanford University.
