Walter Koenig, Chekov from “Star Trek,” Passes Away at 90

Walter Koenig, best known for his role as Ensign Chekov in the original “Star Trek” series, died on Sunday at the age of 90.

According to a spokesperson, his daughter, Danielle, and his niece were with him when he died of natural causes at his home in North Hollywood. They shared that Koenig was remembered for his kindness, humor, and the appreciation he offered to everyone he met.

The representative also noted that Koenig recognized the significance of “Star Trek” to its fans and actively embraced the community surrounding it.

Koenig began his acting career in the 1960s with roles in shows like “Gidget” and “I Spy” before he became widely known for his portrayal of Chekov. He played the character in 36 episodes from 1966 to 1969. Chekov, as the sole member of the Enterprise crew from a Communist nation, symbolized the potential for collaboration between opposing countries in the show’s advanced timeline.

He later reprised his Chekov role in several movies, including “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,” and “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.”

Koenig’s career extended beyond “Star Trek,” featuring appearances in series like “Babylon 5,” “Columbo,” and “Futurama,” among many others. He also contributed as a writer for projects like “The Incredible Hulk” and participated in video games, such as “Maximum Surge.”

His representative offered condolences to his many loyal fans worldwide, expressing gratitude for the memories and inspiration Koenig provided over the years. “Thank you, Walter, for the memories, the inspiration, and for boldly going where few have gone before,” they added.
