Angus McInnes, the actor best known for his role as John “Dutch” Vander in two Star Wars movies, has died. He was 77 years old.
McInnes' family told Fox News Digital: “Our hearts are broken. He was at home surrounded by love and we had so much support. Please send us your lovely condolences. We would like to thank everyone for their support.''
“In his final months, he remained strong and displayed a unique sense of humor that brought light to the darkest of situations,” McInnes' longtime manager told Fox News Digital in a statement.

“I will always cherish his cheeky laugh and incredible talent as an actor. We have lost a true legend. May he rest in peace and return to glory.”

In a statement shared to McInnes' Facebook page on Monday, McInnes' family confirmed that he passed away on December 23rd.
“To all Angus fans around the world, it is with a heavy heart that we write this: Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and actor. Angus McInnes passed away on December 23, 2024. He leaves us peacefully, surrounded by his family. Family and love,” they wrote.

McInnes played starship pilot Vander, leader of the rebel Gold Squadron, in the first film in the series, 1977's Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope. The Canadian native returned to the series to voice the character in 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which was his last film appearance.
In a Facebook post, McInnes' family recalled his love for Star Wars fans.
“For Angus, being a Star Wars fan held a special place in his heart,” they said. “He loved meeting you at the convention, hearing your stories and sharing his passion for storytelling. He was always humbled, delighted and honored by the admiration and passion of the fans and convention community. I did.”

McInnes' film and television career spans more than 40 years. Born on October 27, 1947 in Ontario, he made his first film role in the 1975 Canadian science fiction sports film Rollerball.
The actor went on to star in Superman II, Witness, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, Atlantic City, Judge Dredd, Hellboy, Eyes Wide Shut, and The Black Dahlia. and “Captain Phillips.''
His TV credits include roles in “Space: 1999,” “The Littlest Hobo,” “The New Statesman,” “Vikings” and “River City,” among others.

“His work has touched the lives of countless people, and he takes great pride in being a part of these stories that continue to resonate with audiences around the world,” his family said in a post. ''
It added: “Angus was more than just an actor, he was a kind, thoughtful and generous spirit who brought warmth and humor to the lives of everyone who knew him.”
“He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and fellow actors, as well as by his fans around the world. His family would like to thank you all.”
