“Star Wars” is set to return with brand new characters and an entirely new story.
Simon Kinberg is set to write and produce the new trilogy for Lucasfilm and will launch the new saga, giving the legendary “Star Wars” an entirely different feel and direction, The Hollywood Reporter reported Thursday. The storyline will not be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga, although it remains possible for some of the legendary characters to appear in some way, the outlet reported. New characters will be introduced as part of the new production.

Kathleen Kennedy will join Kinberg in producing the new trilogy. This is familiar territory for Kinberg, who is already well immersed in the “Star Wars” franchise. Kinberg co-created the Emmy-nominated animated series, “Star Wars: Rebels with Dave Filoni,” as well as “Carrie Beck.”
He was also credited for helping to relaunch “Star Wars” after Disney bought Lucasfilm by acting as a consultant on the 2015 production of “The Force Awakens.”
Kinberg’s other credits include work on the “X-Men” movies, “Logan” and the first two “Deadpool” films. He is in production on Edgar Wright’s take on Stephen King’s “The Running Man.”
