Starbucks, Mercedes team up in EV charging network expansion

Mercedes-Benz High Power Charging announced Wednesday that it has partnered with the Seattle-based coffee giant to install 100 EV charging stations in Starbucks stores across the U.S.

The first phase of the project will begin along Interstate 5, which stretches from Canada to Mexico.

“Starbucks has a long history of implementing renewable and clean energy projects and working with communities where this infrastructure is lacking,” Starbucks Chief Sustainability Officer Michael Kobori said in a statement. “Our partnership with Mercedes is the next step in expanding our EV charging network and ensuring our customers can fuel up sustainably while enjoying Starbucks.”

Starbucks says it already has more than 1,000 stores in the U.S. with access to EV charging stations, and the new partnership with Mercedes will help it reach that number, helping it reach its goal of reducing carbon emissions by 50 percent by the end of the decade.

Mercedes-Benz High Power Charging has committed an initial investment of $1 billion to its mission of “building the most desirable charging network” in the U.S. The charging company’s first U.S. station will open in November 2023, and it has since opened 12 other locations across the South. TexasAlabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky.
